Volvo Bold Move: The ES90 Brings Luxury, Performance, and Sustainability to Sedans

Volvo is proving that its electric future isn’t just about SUVs. Meet the Volvo ES90, an innovative electric sedan that blends cutting-edge technology, sleek design, and impressive performance. Unveiled early Wednesday, the ES90 breaks from the traditional SUV trend by offering a high-riding, aerodynamically optimized body with a liftback-style rear hatch. This makes it not only stylish but also the most aerodynamic Volvo ever produced.

The Volvo ES90 isn’t your typical sedan. It shares the three-box shape of traditional luxury cars but takes things further with a raised ride height and a sleek, coupe-like rear hatch—similar to the Polestar 2. With its available 20-inch and 22-inch wheels filling the wheel-well gaps, the ES90 looks both sporty and sophisticated.

But it’s not just about looks—the design is functional, too. Volvo boasts a drag coefficient of just 0.25, making it more aerodynamic than the EX90 SUV, which comes in at 0.29. This means better efficiency and a quieter ride, which EV enthusiasts will appreciate.

Size and Comfort

At 196.9 inches long, the ES90 is about the same length as the Lucid Air but boasts a longer wheelbase at 122.1 inches—offering more interior space. It’s also three inches wider and 5.4 inches taller in its lowest ride height configuration, giving it a more commanding presence on the road.

Volvo’s focus on comfort is clear inside, where high-quality, sustainable materials are used. The brand’s Nordico material—crafted from recycled PET plastic bottles—lines the seats, while all wood trim is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. The ES90 also incorporates 29% recycled aluminum, 18% recycled steel, and 16% recycled polymers and bio-based materials, proving Volvo’s commitment to sustainability.

Electrifying Performance

Under the hood—or rather, under the floor—Volvo offers multiple powertrain options for the ES90:

  • Single Motor (Rear-Wheel Drive): 329 hp, 354 lb-ft of torque, 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds.
  • Twin Motor (All-Wheel Drive): 442 hp, 495 lb-ft of torque, 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds.
  • Twin Motor Performance: 670 hp, 635 lb-ft of torque, 0-60 mph in a blistering 3.9 seconds.

With this lineup, Volvo ensures that both efficiency-focused drivers and performance enthusiasts have something to be excited about.

Battery, Charging, and Range

Volvo equips the ES90 with two battery options:

  • Single-Motor Model: 88-kWh usable battery (92-kWh gross capacity)
  • Twin-Motor Models: 102-kWh usable battery (106-kWh gross capacity)

The official EPA range is still pending, but Volvo aims for 435 miles on the European WLTP cycle for the larger battery version. More impressively, the ES90 features an 800-volt electrical architecture, enabling ultra-fast charging:

  • 350 kW max charging speed (Europe-specific models)
  • 186 miles of range added in just 10 minutes
  • 10-80% charge in 20 minutes
  • Full recharge in 8-10 hours on home chargers

Additionally, Volvo plans to offer Plug and Charge, meaning owners can simply plug in at compatible stations without dealing with payment apps. The ES90 is also bidirectional charging ready, meaning it could eventually power your home during outages.

Inside, the ES90 is packed with the latest technology. A 9.0-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.5-inch touchscreen run on Google-based software, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Nvidia Drive AGX Orin computing system will enable advanced driver-assist features, possibly including hands-free driving in the future.

For audiophiles, a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system ensures an immersive in-car experience. Meanwhile, digital key functionality allows drivers to lock, unlock, and start their car via smartphone.

A Statement in the EV Market

With SUVs dominating the EV space, Volvo’s ES90 is a bold move that brings attention back to sedans. It represents Volvo’s commitment to luxury, sustainability, and performance in one sleek package. As part of Volvo’s plan to release 10 new or updated models within the next two years, the ES90 is a standout—especially with the S60 now discontinued and the S90 being the only other sedan in Volvo’s lineup.

With its blend of Scandinavian elegance, high-tech features, and impressive power, the Volvo ES90 is shaping up to be a game-changer in the luxury EV market. Whether you’re a sedan lover or just looking for an electric vehicle with more style and efficiency, the ES90 is one to watch.
